Custom software development

External Software started by building custom software for healthcare organizations and laboratories. We still take on a few projects a year where that experience helps: connecting systems, moving data where you can use it, and building the reports and apps on top.

What we work on

Healthcare and lab integrations

Bi-directional HL7 interfaces between EMR and LIS systems, so orders and results stay in the clinic's own EMR, and connections to claim management networks.

Healthcare integrations

Payroll and HR data in your database

Pulling Paylocity data into SQL Server or another database so it can be joined with the rest of your data and reported on in Power BI.

Paylocity integration

Reports and dashboards

Reports that refresh on their own from the systems you already use, instead of spreadsheets rebuilt by hand every week.

Specimen tracking

Lab work led us to start building a specimen tracking system, with an early access program for labs that want to help shape it.

How we work

  • Your data stays yours. We build on databases and systems you control, and hand over the code and documentation.
  • Sensitive data handled carefully. Healthcare work taught us to treat patient and employee data with care from the start.
  • Small, focused tools. One job done well beats a large system nobody wants to maintain.
  • Plain English. Clear scope, clear prices, and honest answers when something is not a good fit.

Our own software

The same approach goes into our products. Hark is a meeting recorder for Windows, Mac and Linux that transcribes on your own computer. See all our software, or read more articles on integrations and lab software.

Frequently asked questions

Do you still take custom software projects? +

Yes, selectively. Most of our time now goes into our own products, so we take on projects that fit what we know well: integrations, data and reporting, and desktop apps.

What kinds of projects fit best? +

Connecting systems that do not talk to each other, getting data out of a vendor system into a database you control, building reports on top of it, and small focused desktop or web apps.

How do I start? +

Email support@externalsoftware.com with what you need, the systems involved and your timeline. We will tell you honestly whether we are a good fit.
